Boys, girls cross country teams take Decatur County title

The Greensburg boys and girls cross country teams both claimed Decatur County titles in Tuesday's meet with North Decatur and South Decatur. The boys won the team competition with 15 pts. The Pirates took nine of the first 11 spots in the race. Joe Hawkins, Jake Hawkins, and TJ Gorman pushed the pace from the start. Joe was the individual champion and set the course record running 16:17.2 for 5000m. Joe’s performance moved him to 13th all-time in school history and earned All-County recognition for the second year in a row. Senior Jake Hawkins was second overall in a personal best of 16:23.6 and was All-County for the fourth time. Jake’s time is now the 16th-best ever at GCHS. TJ Gorman took 3rd place with a time of 16:25.3 earning All-County distinction for the third year in a row. Cameron Schwartz placed 4th in a season-best time of 18:14.6. The senior was on the All-Decatur County team for the fourth consecutive season. Quinton Walker finished in 5th place overall running 18:37.3 to All-County recognition. The Pirates’ Zack Blodgett was 6th in 19:06.9, his fastest time of 2023. Blodgett was all-county for the second year in a row. Sophomore Dante Hess placed 7th in 19:10.1 and was also all-county. Malakai Nicolaides was 8th in 19:40.2 while Chase Tekulve finished 11th place in 19:46.3. Tekulve had his best race of the year breaking 20:00 for the first time in 2023. The Pirates are now 45-23 on the season. In the girls race, the Pirates also won their race taking the top five spots. Alaina Bedel won her second race of the season and was the 2023 Decatur County Champion finishing in 21:17.7. Tori Gauck recorded her fastest time of 2023 and was the runner-up in a time of 22:33.1. Gauck’s race earned her All-County honors for the third time. Sophomore Tiffani Gramman finished in third place. Gramman ran 22:50.9 to break 23:00 for the first time this year and earned All-County for the third consecutive season. Greensburg’s Hannah Crowell was fourth overall in 23:21.8 and was on the All-County team. Ally Foster placed fifth in the meet in 23:40.9. Foster was also All-Decatur County for the fourth time in her career. Brooke Welsh was ninth overall in 25:28.8 to garner All-County recognition. Other Greensburg finishers included Addy Dolan 12th in a personal best of 26:20.4, Allison Duncan 15th in 26:57.9, and Addison Meyer in 17th with a career-best time of 27:43.7. The Lady Pirates improved their record for 2023 to 35-28. Both teams race again next weekend at the Ted Fox Invitational at Bedford North Lawrence High School on Sat., September 23 at 9 a.m.
