The Greensburg football fell 36-14 to Shelbyville in their 2024 season opener on the road Friday night. Junior quarterback Bryson Abplanalp completed five of 12 passing attempts for 66 yards. Abplanalp also ran for a touchdown. Junior running back Austin Cruz ran for 68 yards on 18 carries and ran for a touchdown. The Pirates fell into a 22-0 hole late in the second quarter. A crisp two-minute drill got the Pirates in the end zone right before half to cut the deficit to 22-7. Junior Carson Kilgore intercepted a pass from Shelbyville quarterback Tyler Gwinnup on the opening drive of the third quarter. Cruz would find the end zone shortly after to cut the deficit to eight at 22-14. However, the Pirate defense could not hold, surrendering two more scores to the Golden Bears in a 36-14 loss.
