Greensburg's Joe Hawkins advanced out of Saturday's IHSAA regional at Evansville Mater Dei, with a 32nd-place finish to qualify for this week's state championship. The Pirates had six individual qualifiers that raced in the regional. In the girls’ meet, Columbus North’s Carys Glyn Jones won the race in 18:17.5 leading the Lady Bulldogs to the Regional victory. Sophomore Alain Bedel was the top finisher for the Lady Pirates. She had her fastest time of the season running 21:12.3 to earn 57th place out of 243 runners. Tori Gauck ended her high school cross-country career with a season-best performance. Gauck finished 90th in 21:57.7. She ranks 13th in school history for 5000m. The other four schools to qualify for the State Meet next weekend in Terre Haute were Bloomington South, Floyd Central, Jasper, and Bloomington North. Jackson Nolan from Evansville F.J. Reitz won the boys’ championship on Saturday. The senior ran 15:09.2 to set the course record. Bloomington North won the team competition with only 51 pts. Hawkins lowered his personal best for the second straight week. The junior now ranks 11th in school history with his time of 16:08.4 for 5000m. Quinton Walker broke the 18:00 barrier for the second straight week. Walker placed 131st out of 250 runners in a time of 17:58.3. Teammate Xavier Cassis ran 18:03.9, his best time ever for 5 km as the junior finished 142nd. Senior Chase Tekulve crossed the finish line for the last time in Pirate Blue. Tekulve was 162nd overall with a time of 18:19.6. Other qualifying schools in the regional included Evansville Reitz, Columbus North, Edgewood, and Floyd Central. Hawkins will run in the IHSAA State Finals on Saturday at the LaVerne Gibson Course in Terre Haute. The boys race is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m. Tickets for Saturday's race must be purchased in advance. Cash will not be accepted at the event.
