Girls tennis earns three EIAC championships

The Greensburg girls tennis team earned three out of a possible five EIAC championships at the conference individual tournament at GCHS over the weekend. Abigail Hoeing needed a first-set tiebreak to win her title over Batesville's Laney Walsman 7-6(4), 6-2. Both doubles pairings also earned titles. Janae Comer and Ella Chapman needed three sets to defeat Lawrenceburg's Ella Shelton and Lola Safaviyan, winning 7-5, 6-7(3), and 1-0(2). Hailey Duerstock and Josie Nobbe defeated Batesville's Belle Westerfield and Molly Meer 6-0, 6-1. In other action, at No .1 singles, Jenna Foster lost in the semifinals to East Central 2-6, 3-6. At No 3. singles, Mary Harmon won her morning match against Rushville but was forced to withdraw due to illness. In her place, Mya Comer lost to East Central in the finals 2-6, 3-6. "Overall, it was a great day for the girls getting to compete for individual accomplishments," head coach June Rigney said. "We were challenged in some matches at, and times, I wasn't pleased with our mental toughness. We overcame some adversity and ended up winning all the matches we should have won." The Pirates compete in the sectional in Greensburg beginning on Wednesday against Jennings County, Madison, Shawe Memorial, and Southwestern. The action starts at 5:30 p.m. at GCHS.
